The Truck: RIP 2002 – 2007
Well, someone decided to have a little fun at our expense last night.
The Tundra, common name “super-ultra-truck”, or also occasionally known as “The Silver Bullet”, was found dead by a tow-truck guy on the side of Airport Road early this morning.
Apparently someone managed to break into it–right in our driveway–and then take it out and have a little fun. They ended that fun by doing some jousting with a tree. The tree won.
The Van also suffered a minor molesting, but nothing horrible: just some change thrown on the floor.
We haven’t been able to see it yet as it is the weekend and the tow-truck guy is “out of service”, but according to the office personnel we won’t be driving it any time soon.
Truck: You were a good truck, a bit underpowered at times, but a good tow vehicle nonetheless. But I’m still sorry I blew a couple hundred bucks in new brakes for you a month ago.
UPDATE:
We just heard back from the insurance company:
I’m extremely upset that we purposely moved away from Detroit, for reasons similar to this. I felt so safe here, and i KNOW this kind of stuff happens everywhere, I just never expected it to be us.
We took our first trip as a couple to Niagara Falls in the “new” truck, numerous trips to the hardware store, friends have borrowed him, and he even towed the camaro from Virginia to Michigan and Michigan to California. He lost a small battle with a mailbox a few winters ago, but we still loved him. He will be sorely missed and may the bastards who did this, be prosecuted to the fullest.
There’s no way to gain back the trust you once felt…heal the ‘violated’ feeling you have. They also broke into the van, but didn’t steal anything, just roughed up the inside for “show”. Bastards.
I remember being a teenager and doing so-called reckless acts, but couldn’t fathom taking it SO far as to steal someone’s vehicle and crash it into a tree. Bastards.
What a shame. To some extent, I can relate… I had my favorite car totaled several years ago when a 16-year-old punk decided to ram me at 45 MPH while I was sitting at a red light and he was trying to find his favorite Metallica track on his tape deck. The worst part about that sort of thing is insurance just doesn’t cover all the hassle and angst you have to go through to replace a vehicle when you didn’t necessarily want to. But the optimist in me says to see it as an opportunity to upgrade to the all-new well-powered Tundra.
You have my deepest sympathies. I am also an owner of a Tundra, silver/perl grey, flare-side no less! I love my truck–it’s just perfect. We’re planning on a tonneau cover this summer to keep rain (and other people’s furniture) out of the bed…. My, as yet nameless, but well loved Tundra is still only 32000 miles young, even though it’s an 04 (Friday, August 13, 2004 is the truck’s “buy day”). This one has the “I-Force V8″ and seems to have plenty of power–great fun pulling out of the driveway at my old job and leaving tracks more than once!
Anyhow, may I suggest a 2004 or 2005 -era Tundra. The 2004 I have has the “I-Force V8, which may develop the power you need–and certainly would if you add the supercharger and, maybe, modify the exhaust–the 05’s managed to up from 245 HP to about 271 just by changing the computer that controls the engine and adding one extra gear–it was the same engine!!!
The new 2007 model is still too new to have proven its mettle and been thoroughly debugged… (And it doesn’t come in flareside! Sadness! )
